aint-Emilion is located in the north-east part of the Gironde department, 8 km east of the city of Libourne and 40 km north-east of Bordeaux.
 
e Saint-Emilion appellation is part of the larger Bordeaux region. It is one of the area's largest appellations in terms of surface area, with 5,400 hectares, or about 6% of all Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée wines produced in the Gironde. Saint-Emilion's average production amounts to about 290,000 hectolitres a year, or the equivalent of 5% of all AOC wines in Bordeaux.
 
e sunshine and oceanic influence contribute to the region's exceptional microclimate, ideal for great wines.

 

ere are two Appellations d'Origine Contrôlée for the wines of Saint-Emilion: SAINT-EMILION and SAINT-EMILION GRAND CRU. The latter category includes a list of classified growths which is divided into GRAND CRU CLASSÉ and PREMIER GRAND CRU CLASSÉ.
e classification is revised every ten years. The last one was published in September 7th, 2006. Fifty-seven châteaux are entitled to the GRAND CRU CLASSÉ classification and fifteen to the PREMIER GRAND CRU CLASSÉ classification. In 2006, two châteaux were promoted “PREMIER”: Pavie Macquin and Troplong Mondot .
